A CT scan of the chest organs is one of the most frequent examinations performed in our Center. As a rule, a CT scan of the thoracic organs is performed when the patient has the following complaints: chest pain, shortness of breath, pain when taking a deep breath, hemoptysis, cough, high blood pressure, pain in the heart area, pain in the spine, pain in the thoracic spine, pain when turning, high body temperature, general weakness, rapid fatigue, hoarse voice, enlarged lymph nodes in the armpit, a feeling of heaviness in the chest, chest injury, rib fracture, chest fracture, and sternum fracture.
In our Center, a CT scan of the chest without contrast enhancement is conducted to visualize the lung parenchyma in case of bone-traumatic changes; a CT scan of the chest with contrast enhancement is carried out to differentiate inflammatory and tumor processes in the lungs and mediastinum, to visualize the chambers of the heart, pulmonary vessels and the aorta.
Indications for a chest CT scan without contrast enhancement:
- infectious lung diseases – pneumonia (of bacterial/viral origin), aspiration pneumonia, and heart attack-pneumonia after pulmonary embolism (PE);
- detection of post-traumatic changes (in the lung parenchyma, fractures of the sternum, ribs, vertebral bodies of the thoracic spine, presence of pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum);
- detection of pleurisy and hydropericardium;
- detection of the signs of tuberculosis, residual changes after tuberculosis;
- detection of nodular lesions of the lungs in occupational diseases, sarcoidosis;
- interstitial lung diseases (alveolitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, histiocytosis, lymphogenic carcinomatosis, lymphangioleiomyomatosis);
- detection of the presence of emphysema and atelectasis;
- detection of hernias of the esophageal opening of the diaphragm.
Indications for a CT scan of the chest organs with contrast enhancement:
- detection and differential diagnosis of benign and malignant neoplasms of the lungs, pleura, and chest wall;
- detection of the signs of secondary damage in lymph nodes and chest organs;
- detection of lymphadenopathy (lymphogranulomatosis, sarcoidosis);
- detection of the signs of pulmonary embolism (PE) and septic embolism;
- detection of diseases of the heart and main blood vessels;
- detection of abnormalities in the development of thoracic and mediastinal organs;
- detection of hollow formations in the lung parenchyma (tuberculomas, hollow forms of cancer, abscesses, parasitic cysts), signs of mediastinitis;
- detection of the mammary gland pathology in women.
