Indications for a CT scan of the middle ear without contrast enhancement:

• detection of inflammatory processes of the outer and middle ear (tympanic cavities);
• detection of the condition of the auditory ossicles, determination of their destruction;
• assessment of the bone structure of the temporal bones, detection of fractures in trauma;
• detection of inflammatory changes in the pyramids and mastoid processes of the temporal bones, signs of bone destruction and remodulation of cells of the mastoid processes;
• detection of tumor processes in the projection of the temporal bone (cholesteatoma, etc.), as well as detection of the spread of intracranial tumors with destruction of the temporal bone.

As a rule, a CT scan of the middle ear is conducted when the patient has the following complaints: tinnitus, hearing impairment, long-term sore throat and high temperature, headache, dizziness, malaise, ear trauma, temporal bone trauma, foreign objects in the ear, bleeding from the ear, inflammation of the ears, and damage to the eardrum; a scan is also necessary before undergoing otolaryngological (ENT) surgery. 

A CT scan of the middle ear is performed without contrast enhancement.
