A CT scan of the neck is performed to detect inflammatory processes of the soft tissues of the neck (abscesses, phlegmons), oncological processes, and to visualize the blood vessels of the neck.

Indications for a neck CT scan without contrast enhancement:

 

  • identifying traumatic lesions of the neck area, assessment of the tissue and organ damage;
  • detecting the presence of foreign bodies before the operation to remove them;
  • detecting congenital pathologies of the neck organs, the presence of cysts, diverticula of the larynx and esophagus;
  • detecting the signs of inflammatory processes in the neck area (presence of abscesses, phlegmons of soft tissues);
  • assessing the changes in the thyroid gland, assessing the size of the retrosternal goiter;
  • determining the presence of enlarged lymph nodes;
  • detecting the lesions of the cervical spine.

 

Indications for a neck CT scan with contrast enhancement:

 

  • detection of the pathology of the vessels of the neck, the degree of their damage in case of traumatic lesions, including the assessment of carotid stenosis according to the NASCET scale;
  • detection of inflammatory and destructive lesions of the neck organs and their distribution;
  • detection of neoplasms of the neck organs, the extent of their invasion into the surrounding structures;
  • detection of the presence of enlarged lymph nodes with an assessment of their structure; 
  • preoperative planning (for vascular surgeons).

A neck CT scan can be performed both with and without contrast enhancement.
